Full Version: Mystery solved: Missing Observation log dialog box was "off screen"

This seems like the most basic question ever, but how do I go see all the log entries I've ever made for a given object? I've looked at the help file for the past 15 minutes and I can't find it? How is this possible? I must be "super-slow" sometimes.
When you say that you want to see all of the log entries for a single object, do you mean all on a single page? Have you tried the Log Browser? Open the Log Browser from the Tools on the Top Menu (it's called 'Browse Logs'). You didn't specify what version of ST4 you're using. I'm still using ST4.0.11, so things may have changed.

The Log Browser shows what types of objects have Logs available under the 'Class' Tab. Select the appropriate 'Class' Tab, then find your object in the window on the right. Select the Object to see a list of all the Logs for that object.

Hope this helps,

Phil S.
Hi Phil. Thanks - I actually looked there first. I can see the stack of objects in the right -hand pane, but try as I might, I can't get them to "open up" (i.e., show me the contents of what I wrote in the log entry). Could something be "broken" in my system? When I click on an object and then click "View," nothing happens. I've shut down and opened again in case something was awry with a corrupt call or something. I can't see the contents *anywhere*.
When I open the Log Browser for some entries for the moon, I see this: [attachment=3008]

I also have some logs for comets & minor planets.

Perhaps the corruption that you're getting is related to the issue you mentioned in the description of the problem caused by the program taking focus from your log entries & applying them to other program commands by mistake.

Hope this helps,

Phil S.
Wow - you're right: I can't see that panel at all. How is this possible?
So - I hate to ask... because we all want him to be writing code, but ... is this a question for Greg?
Sorry, I left out a step. This is what the Log Browser looks like when initially opened: [attachment=3009]

Then when I click on Moon I see this: [attachment=3010] as indicated earlier. I wanted to show how the multiple log entries were displayed for a single object & was less interested in showing how to get to that display dialog.

Check the Help files for more information about the Log Browser.

Maybe you should try creating some dummy log entries to get familiar with the process & get your defauts set up so you can try the Quick Log feature.

Hope this helps,

Phil S.
Thanks Phil. But I used the software last night while observing and had no problem creating *new* entries. I just can't go back to view log entires I've already created.

Phil, do you think I should uninstall it then reinstall it again? Something's gone amuck, right?

For Phil - and others - here's a two-minute screencast you can see what I'm experiencing. Thanks for any help you can give. No longer able to create or view/log entries?

Uninstalled then reinstalled the software. No change. Still can't create or view logs.

OK - maybe, in a way, problem solved! I'm back at the office today (where I did my observing Saturdy night). I have a larger (higher-res) monitor here. The Observation log screen appeared way off to the right - because that's where it was Saturday night. So in a way, mystery solved. But in another way, it seems like it would be ideal in some way to prompt a stray dialogue box to appear on the only (laptop) screen I had while not here at the office. I guess, for the time being, before shutting down here at work, I'll need to discipline myself to remember to drag all dialogue boxes back on top of the main operating window? Doesn't seem optimum - but I'm sure I'll remember to do that eventually. Thanks to you, Phil, for trying to brainstorm with me for a solution. It was, in some ways, super-simple. In other ways, unexpectedly challenging.
I'm glad you were able to figure out what was causing your issue. Since I only have one monitor,I've never lost a dialog off the edge of the display.  Big Grin
