RE: Iapetus transit of Saturn in 2022 – 30th April 4:00am Australia - bigmasterdrago - 2022-05-05 I too use other software and some satellites are seriously problematic. Even our own Moon. One of the programs can use SPICE. The most obvious problem with this is the size of the SPICE data files, which are ~14GB in this setup. Another significant problem is what to do when a simulation is evolved past the time limit of one of the SPICE data files, which is only a few decades for most of the moons. It would be much better to write custom software to be of comparable accuracy, which is what the author of the software is working on now. RE: Iapetus transit of Saturn in 2022 – 30th April 4:00am Australia - theskyhound - 2022-05-05 Please no discussion of other software here. It makes me uncomfortable, and will lead to arguments. Seriously. Even the above makes me want to argue with it, and this isn't the place for that. RE: Iapetus transit of Saturn in 2022 – 30th April 4:00am Australia - theskyhound - 2022-05-05 Ok, I really do have Iapetus fixed. I've added an mp4 video that shows SkyTools overlaid on an actual image. https://youtu.be/VKW-At5UIvw As you can see, the accuracy is very good. The positions of Enceledus and Tethys are just a bit off, but within tolerance. I need to look into one more issue before I release the update with these fixes. I am not expecting that to take too long. I tried to upload the mp4 here, but I couldn't get the mp4 to work and I didn't have a lot of time to spend on that. The ST4v positions agree very well with the images. Nice job. Phil S. RE: Iapetus transit of Saturn in 2022 – 30th April 4:00am Australia - bigmasterdrago - 2022-05-05 I knew if anyone could fix this, it would be Greg. Nice work. Simulation is really breathtaking on a big screen. |
