The thing to keep in mind there is that your dark adapted eye can usually see more faint detail in all but the brightest skies, so it may be best to try to keep your eye dark adapted. I do that using an eye patch over my observing eye, and flip it up only when at the eyepiece. If there are too many lights nearby, sometimes a dark cloth can help block the light around the eyepiece.
I use the eye patch even at dark sites, because a single distant light, or the light from any screen or flashlight will hurt your dark adaption, no matter how dim or red it is.
