Close approach of 2021 JG1 on 24-26 May 2021

Hi All,

For those fortunate to have a large scope I found that the Apollo asteroid 2021 JG1 will approach within ~100,000 km on the 24th through the 26th of May. It's moving at 117"/min. at the fastest The estimated brightness is 16.4 mag.

The orbital elements are attached below, or you can download the latest elements from the MPC.

Hi Phil,

A tip: if you post the orbital elements in a standard format, as from the MPC or JPL, they can be copy/pasted directly into the Osculating Elements dialog.

Hi Greg,

Does the Help give instructions for the output of orbital elements in MPC or JPL format? I always use ST4 to get the elements & don't have anything in the other formats. All I have is the huge MP database in ST4 that I keep updated via MPCORB & ASTORB plus the NEO epoch of date downloads.

I thought that most ST4 users would use ST4 to download the elements for 2021 JG1 direct from MPC. We checked that functionality during the beta testing, but I haven't verified that it still works recently. Perhaps I should test that. Smile

Typing in orbital elements is best avoided.

The MPC and JPL formats come from external sources like the MPC and JPL. So if you got the elements from one of these sources then you could paste the elements here for others to copy/paste.

The best way to share orbital elements between SkyTools users is through an stx file. The easiest way to do that is to create an observing/target list and put your minor planet in it. Then export the list to a .stx file via the Share/Export function on the planner/target selection tool. You can attach a .stx file here.

Others can save the .stx file and then read it via the Get Lists function.

I just tested the download of elements for 2021 JG1 from MPC. The 'JG' must be upper case to get a match from MPC. My database still has the epoch of the elements as 19 May 2021 after the download, so I'm not certain why MPC didn't provide elements at today's epoch.

Unfortunately for you 2021 JG1 is in Draco tonight at Dec +59° and it fades fast.
