Add a second listing of the same object? [Solved: Supplemental, used conservatively]
#1
Thumbs Up
In a list like Harrington's Cosmic Challenge, the list calls for the same object to be added more than once (e.g., the moon) because additional listings focus on different features of the same object. How would I add a second copy of the same object?

Owen helped me understand the Supplemental List in connection with another question. I think I can just use the Supplemental list for this. It's probably only going to come up infrequently with a list like Cosmic Challenge - so the Supplemental list idea should work great. Question answered.

Owen and I have had a lot of discussions about over using the Supplemental Database. I have pretty much begged him to stop using it for objects that already exist! lol The reason for this is that you are adding a duplicate object, such that you have the real one with all of the associated data, and the fake one with none of it. It is so easy to get them confused and they lie on top of each other on the charts. And if they end up in a shared observing list, then its sort of like an infection that spreads to others!

I personally feel that its better to check to see if the object already exists and then simply refer to it by one of the designations associated with it. Sometimes what I do is I have a set of notes in a folder called "Other Designations" or whatever, and then I put the missing designation in the note brief. All I need to do is load that folder on the planner and enable the notes brief column to remind me of the other designation. To me it really only matters for certain projects, such as a list of objects from a magazine, anyhow. I am happy to use whatever other designations are available instead in most other cases.

Ultimately its of course up to you, and if used conservatively it won't make much difference. What the Supplemental Data is meant for is objects that aren't in the database at all, which happens rarely, but can happen.

Super-conservatively then. Understood. We'll follow your lead, Greg.
