Exploring Amateur Astronomy is a fantastic companion to SkyTools, and I recommend it to all SkyTools Visual users. This is no accident because the author, Mike Hotka, is a long time SkyTools user.
Mike has a practical approach to visual observing that he calls Goal Oriented Observing. We're all familiar with observers who have their list of go to objects that they can easily find, know will look good, and so observe again and again. While there is nothing at all wrong with that, Mike's goal oriented approach can help observers find new inspiration--and new objects to observe. It's also a great way for beginners and old-timers alike to find new challenges and learn new skills along the way. The Astronomical League's observing programs are a key tool in his approach.
SkyTools is a natural companion to Mike's method because it adds more dimensions. Once you enter your site, telescope, and either create or choose an observing list, SkyTools takes over. SkyTools tells you which of these objects are best to go for tonight, and what time will give you the best view.
