Transfer Settings to another PC/Laptop
#1
Hi,

I just purchased ST and am starting to set it up on my Home PC, once done I will probably use it mostly on my Laptop or Observatory PC. I have had a look around for how to transfer the settings but couldn't find anything - presumably there is a configuration files(s) somewhere that I just need to copy into a folder that will populate the new PC with equipment details etc?.

Can someone point me in the right direction please.

Hello,

There is very little that will transfer from SkyTools 3 to SkyTools 4 Imaging, because there are so many changes.

The same isn't true for SkyTools 4 Visual, so if you have the bundle, open SkyTools 4 Visual. Select Help Contents from the top level Help menu. The 4th topic down is "Transferring Your SkyTools 3 Data." This will transfer things like your logs, telescopes, locations, etc.

Check the Help for the use of the Sync function. That's used to syncronize ST4 between different computers, so it should be what you're looking for. Basically, you create the Sync file on the original computer, then copy the Sync file to the second computer & read the Sync file into SkyTools on that computer.

Hope this helps,

Phil S.

I cant find Sync anywhere but I have found Backup and Restore so assume that will do it?

I'm runnig ST4.0.11 Visual that shows the option to "Sync Databases" under the "Tools" Top menu. It's under "Restore".

Well darn, that's not an option that's available in the Imaging version. I'm sorry.

You might try a Backup - Restore to see if that will work.

Backup/Restore is the way to go in Imaging until Sync is implemented.

My apologies. I had just answered a question about transferring ST3 data and confused the two questions. SkyTools 4 Imaging doesn't have the Sync feature yet. Its supposed to, but I keep finding other things to finish instead. Soon.

In the meantime, yes, make a backup and then restore that backup on the other device. It makes an exact copy of the data each time. Just beware that when you restore a backup it overwrites everything, and any changes made since the last backup was restored will be lost.

Reviving an old thread.

I'm running ST 4.0.11.18 imaging, and tryinig to transfer all my setting from my win 10 PC to a Win 11 PC.

I've done a backup, and can see that it creates (among other things) an imaging systems folder containg 35 files and about about 250kb of data - mostly (all?) in .bin format.

But when I do a restore on my new system, it does not give me the option to restore that folder.

So I updated to 4.1.11.18, hoping that would fix the problem.  But it does not.

And I can find no sync button that I understand can be used to do the same thing.

I'd appreciate any help you can offer

I've attachedmy backup file in case that is helpful.  Actually, I couldn't do that for some reason.

Hello John,

It not clear where things have gone wrong, so I'll provide full instructions to do it.

This is what works best:

1. On the computer you are backing up, create a folder called "SkyTools Backups"
2. The the SkyTools Backup function to create a backup and put that backup in this folder
3. On the other machine, open Restore and select the "SkyTools Backups" folder, rather than a specific subfolder
4. When you do that, all of the backups that have been made to this folder will be listed by the date the backup was made.
5. Select the backup (likely there will only be the one listed) and click Restore
