Write note beside double stars
#1
Hi,

I have not use the app for a few years, but I would like to try again.

I remember writing notes beside the item I looked to remember later on.
Like: Easy find or Couldn't separate

Is that capability gone?

Hello,

That's the Notes Brief column. Each object has a place for notes to be attached to it, via the Notes tab of the Object Info dialog. At the top of the notes area is a place for "Brief" text. The text in this area can be displayed in a column on the Nightly Planner. This is what you are thinking of.

Two important things to know about that:

1. Because there are different types of notes for different purposes, you can have separate sets of notes. This is controlled by the Attachments folder, because notes are a type of attachment. Each folder contains a separate set of notes. So maybe you could have an attachment folder just for double star notes, which I would recommend. To see those notes, you must have the correct attachment folder select in the upper left of the Nightly Planner. There is a default folder called "My Attachments" and if that is the only one you have, then all of the notes you have made will be there, so just keep it as is.

2. In the Nightly Planner the brief column must be enabled for it to appear. Click on the gear icon for the column scheme you are using (menu just to the right of the List Functions) menu. Look for the Status and Attachments section on the right. Make sure the box next to Note Brief is checked. Click Save.

You should see a column labeled Brief in the planner. You may need to scroll to the right to see it. This is the area your notes will appear in. You can right click in that area and type a note, skipping the need to open the Object Info.

Let me know if you have any more questions.

Is there a way to get data from the Notes box show up in the "Attachments" column of an observing list? I found the "Brief" field and am using it, but is there a way to use the attachment feature so that its data shows up on an observing list a column? Thank you! Christina LeGrand

Hello,

The notes can be any length. Even thousands of pages, if you wanted. So they are not a good candidate for display in a column of the list.  So the answer is no.

Part of the reason for the existence of the Brief is to provide a field that has a limited length for display in the list.

If you have the time, it would help me to know what you are trying to do--what info you wish to provide with the double stars, and why the brief doesn't work. That can help me plan features in the future.
