Star labelling in the IA
#1
What determines star common names? For example, I have been trying to get Polaris Australis labelled with its common name, to no avail. So, I guess its not rated that highly Wink

Thanks

Hello,

Polaris Australis is a common name in SkyTools, so you just need to check how your common names display is set up in SkyTools.

If you are talking about a chart label, open the chart and the the "View" controls via the button at the top. Select the Labels tab and ensure that the star labels are turned on and that labels in general are turned on.

On the right side of that same dialog you can control what labels are displayed. Stars should already be selected. Ensure that Common Names has a red check mark next to it and that it is the top item in the list. Also ensure that the check box next to "use well known common star names only" is not checked.

If you are talking about other than a chart, see the Labels tab on the Preferences, opened via the Setup menu at the top of the planner.
Clear skies,

Hi Bob,

The star labels are controlled in the Label tab of the View dialog as shown: [attachment=1817]

By arranging the order of the label options, you can determine which labels are applied & in what order. The top option that's checked takes precedence. To change the precedence, highlight an option then use the Up - Down arrow buttons to move your selection in the list. Be sure to have the mag range set appropriately, too.

Hope this helps,

Phil S.

Hi Greg,

You beat me to it  Wink.

I'm still having no luck getting stars to label in pretty much the default settings. I've looked at every star related drop down box in the IA and still have an unlabelled star sitting in the corner (Tau Sgr, 40 Sgr)

I see the issue now.... the faint mag (default as I've never changed it) is way to bright. Fixed. Just too much to look at!
